Backlighting Village Hotel is located in a small fishing village in northeastern Zhejiang Province. The village faces the sea and is embraced on three sides by hills. Based on two houses and one courtyard, the project is designed as a seaside hotel. Its public area includes the cafe, courtyard dining, and stone walls.
A large quantity of stone materials of varied specifications are used in indoor and outdoor spaces. Coarse and smooth aesthetics are created through different processes. Additionally, diverse green plants in the space present relaxing and natural experience. Locals in the eastern coastal area of China usually pile stones up to build residences, due to geological (abundant in rocks and lacking in land) and climate (typhoon-prone) factors. Therefore, many stone villages appeared in the early days in coastal areas, such as Zhoushan, Ningbo, Taizhou, and Wenzhou cities, Zhejiang Province, and Fujian Province, with distinctive regional characteristics and cultural attributes.
However, as modern building materials and processes emerge, locals gradually abandon traditional construction processes and materials. Consequently, their residences are all of a piece. Backlighting Village Hotel aims to restore some materials and processes of local color and uniqueness. Traditional forms and aesthetics are integrated with modern space function to demonstrate the diverse possibilities of rural architectural space and recall the nostalgic memory of traditions.
