Utilizing the environmental advantages of the city park to preserve its openness, retaining the unique shape and age of the cement factory to create an unfamiliar experience, and at the same time, meeting the needs of a wide range of consumers has become the design direction of Dayi. By recognizing the intrinsic needs of contemporary coffee consumers, we have made coffee time an accessible and practical escape from the everyday.
Renovation is not remodeling, but giving new life. The renovation project focuses on restoration of the original building, maintaining the original structural appearance of the building to a great extent, and using local materials as much as possible, practicing long-termism while preserving the traces of use and the texture of the years.
The interior adopts an open layout with a large area of glass and French floor-to-ceiling windows interacting with the outdoor landscape, elevating the sofa seating area on one side to imply the transition of the area while increasing the staggered levels of space. In addition, with the coffee counter as the center, the café is scattered to extend functional areas for business, gathering, reading, and personal leisure to meet the diversified and even multiple consumption needs, and the overall pattern is fluid and soothing.
The whole coffee space abandons the customary spotlights and uses natural light as supplementary lighting, weakening the commercial atmosphere, restoring the flow of light and shadow of the sunrise and sunset, and establishing a vivid perception of man and nature among the shadows of the trees. The materials used in the space are centered on textured wood and coarse textiles, with natural and organic elements balancing the modern clean and hard lines, and decorated with vibrant greenery and artwork to make the atmosphere rich and dynamic.
The outdoor area is created as a relaxing European-style garden, blurring the boundaries with the park environment. The seating is loosely distributed, leaving a social distance and a sense of spatial respiration, so that guests are free to come and go, interact with each other and spend time alone, and write a roaming coffee journal in the fragrance of the flowers and shadows of the trees.
The design of this case understands the desire and helplessness of young people nowadays, and opens up a small fork in the single track of daily life, briefly abstracting and amplifying freedom in the “corner” time of a cup of coffee, planting a new space in the gap between the “track” and the “wilderness”. In the “margin” time of a cup of coffee, we can make a short break and enlarge our freedom, and plant fresh flowers in the gap between the “track” and “wilderness”.
