SCOPE Architekten has completed the new SAP Labs Munich in Garching near Munich. This campus sets a new benchmark for contemporary office architecture and reflects the future vision of Science City Garching, one of Europe’s leading research and education hubs. As a key milestone in the strategic partnership between SAP and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the building brings together 600 SAP employees and 120 TUM researchers, creating a shared environment where business and academia work side by side on pioneering projects in sustainability, mobility, Industry 4.0, and commerce.

Located at the entrance to the Science Loop, SAP Labs Munich plays a pivotal role as a gateway to this interconnected research ecosystem. Designed as a micro-campus, the building fosters new forms of collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange. Its heart is a five-story atrium – a lively, light-filled space that doubles as a public interface. Featuring terraces, galleries and informal seating zones, it encourages spontaneous encounters and community spirit. The sculptural staircase, with its wide integrated seating steps, reinforces this dynamic, transforming circulation into a social experience.

The building’s flexibility is fundamental to its design. Three staggered volumes surround the atrium and intuitively connect SAP workspaces, TUM research areas, and public zones. The simple, modular construction with removable floors and reconfigurable ceilings ensures long-term adaptability. Even the open parking deck has been designed with future office conversion in mind, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to architectural longevity.

Throughout the campus, thoughtful design elements bring identity and creativity to the fore. Roof terraces, a Work Café, fitness areas and event spaces blur the lines between work and leisure, offering spaces that respond to a variety of needs. The material and color palette create distinct atmospheres, while clear sightlines foster orientation and connection.

Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of the building. Following circular design principles, it prioritizes recyclable materials, avoids unnecessary layers, and enables reversible construction for future adaptations. Combined with efficient building technologies and a rooftop social space, SAP Labs Munich achieves both environmental responsibility and user well-being.

As a lively hub where innovation, research and business converge, SAP Labs Munich is more than just a workplace. It is a powerful symbol of the evolving relationship between science and industry – and a forward-looking blueprint for sustainable and collaborative work environments.
