Sneaker brand Veja opened its repair-focused concept, the Veja General Store in Paris’ 10th arrondissement. Designed in collaboration with French architect Alors Studio, the space acts as a cobbler and tailor supporting the repair of shoes and clothes regardless of their brand of origin. It is a further iteration of Veja’s earlier recycling and cobbler programs, such as its Madrid location with an in-store repair bar. The 100-sq-m space has an open wood and glass façade that reveals the process, showcasing the repair machinery. Concrete work tables where two cobblers and a tailor work on shoes and clothes, punctuate the space. Gridded wooden shelves store the in-progress repairs and are also used for arranging a retail area of clothes, accessories and cleaning and shoe-cleaning supplies. Mixed wood, steel, concrete and glass are used to craft an open interior, with the repair work taking central stage in the store’s function and design. Though the cobbler-tailor space can be used for products of any origin, the store’s function aligns the Veja brand with conscious consumption. The General Store goes beyond Veja’s traditional retail strategy of merely selling new shoes by transitioning to an almost entirely repair-based store model. It is part of a greater trend where retailers are showing their sustainability values, leaning into the circular economy through in-store repair areas.
