Vassar's central dining hall is a renovation of a renovation of a renovation of a 1913 McKim, Mead and White building. Foregrounding the table as the crucial objects in a dining hall, this design is configured as a landscape of very large tables of distinctive geometry, that fosters greater social exchanges. Rather than being restricted into groups of 2, 4 or 6, these tables allow for both large and smaller groups of people to share a collective surface, encouraging more social exchange among students. Made from cross laminated timber, the tables and benches have the capacity to seat 800 students in the newly opened up space, with the figures of the tables forming a sense of identity and place within the larger whole.
