This is a display for the “Uni-ssentials by TDS” capsule collection by TOKYO DESIGN STUDIO New Balance, a lifestyle brand developed by New Balance. Since its debut in SS23, this initiative has spanned five seasons at Dover Street Market Ginza and other locations.
“Uni-ssentials by TDS" is an apparel collection that explores the essence of gender neutrality. Garments are displayed in various sizes, on tilted fixtures that follow the diverse hem lengths—visually embodying the concept.
In the first season (SS23), wedge-tied scaffolding materials were assembled by tilting the support columns using a flexible jack base for slope. The footwear was originally made for trail (unpaved road) running, so it was displayed directly on the incline.
For FW23, the spacious venue allowed for a linear two-row configuration. At Hankyu Umeda, the display extended across six spans, showcasing the full SKU lineup (shapes, sizes, and colors).
In SS24, at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA, ready-made steel racks were repurposed into garment fixtures. The added wire mesh on the top and sides gives it the appearance of a sports locker, while allowing in light and securing the volume of products to be hung and displayed.
At T-House New Balance—New Balance’s concept store—we designed a triple-tiered garment rack that utilized the space’s full ceiling height. It was conceived to have a strong presence as an installation.
At Beauty & Youth UNITED ARROWS MARUNOUCHI, two wedge-tied scaffolding racks—one large and one small—were installed, displaying the full SKU lineup. A protective floor covering made of tarpaulin, matching the collection’s signature yellow, was intentionally left in place to emphasize the temporary nature of the POP UP.
For FW24, the repurposed steel racks were updated with a rainbow interference finish through chromate treatment, inspired by the blurred photo prints featured in the collection. A non-toxic trivalent chromium was chosen to achieve both aesthetics and sustainability, aligning with global environmental standards. Additionally, a matching shoe rack was created using scraps from the garment rack posts.
In SS25, handcrafted translucent FRP were used, allowing the wooden rafters under the shelf boards and the threaded post of the jack base to show through, creating visual harmony with the sheer apparel.
The advantage of this plan is that the various collections are clearly visible and easy to pick up, without being aware of gender differences.
