At the long-established ryokan Kamenoi Besso in Yufuin, Oita, Rooms #5 and #7 were renovated from traditional Japanese to Western-style. In Room #5, an open lounge and outdoor bath were added, creating a layout that emphasizes a connection to the garden and immerses guests in nature. In Room #7, multiple rooms were combined, with each space offering a distinct view of the surrounding gardens.

From the creativity, the project centers on “reconstructing the relationship between space and nature,” using distinct approaches for each building. In Room #5, the traditional enclosed layout was reimagined to extend sightlines and circulation toward the garden. A 4-meter-wide glass pane replaced garden-facing openings, integrating the landscape into the interior. Additionally, a raised lounge, deck, and open-air bath were arranged in a gradual sequence, creating a harmonious blend of interior and exterior spaces, which enhances the spatial experience. In Room #7, two separate guest rooms were combined into a single living-dining area. The layout unfolds along the garden, with the bedroom, lounge, study, and bathroom arranged in a gradual sequence. Each space offers distinct sensory experiences, allowing guests to enjoy a varied atmosphere throughout their stay.

From the innovation, the project brings out the potential of existing structures, integrating design elements that cater to modern lifestyles and reflect the evolving expectations of today’s guests. For example, in Room #5,vertical zoning through level changes creates diverse spatial experiences within a limited floor area.Ash wood louvers and movable partitions allow flexible reconfiguration, adapting the space to different needs and offering comfort for various guest scenarios. In Room #7,the existing bathroom, which featured a skylight, was renovated and creatively repurposed as a study bathed in natural light. These methods go beyond the traditional boundaries of ryokan architecture, offering a new direction for renovation practices.

In terms of functionality, the careful layering of architectural elements—such as sight-lines,ceiling height variations, material textures, and the way light enters the space—creates a natural rhythm in the spatial experience. The design also incorporates circulation planning that leverages spatial continuity, along with a layout ensuring all rooms maintain a connection to nature. This subtly encourages relaxation for both mind and body and reflects an understanding that functionality supports beauty.

From an eco-social impact, the project actively incorporates resource reuse and environmental considerations.Renovating instead of rebuild significantly reduces carbon emissions associated with demolition and new construction.Natural materials were chosen to minimize environmental impact while enhancing guest comfort. The ventilation and lighting plans maximize natural forces, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning, further lowering operational emissions.
