Design Research Studio is the design and innovations agency at the heart of Tom Dixon, working on the products, spaces and brands of tomorrow. A restless innovator, Tom established Design Research Studio in 2003 to work on innovative projects and products with a wide variety of partners, brands, developers and entrepreneurs. Tom Dixon’s The Coal Office functions as a live studio combining shop, workshop and office all under one roof, with the culinary delights of a brand-new restaurant and roof terrace. Through stimulating collaborations with names big and small, Tom Dixon have curated an evolving holistic experience designed to push the boundaries of contemporary retail as we know it. The Coal Office serves as the ultimate centre for interiors, a place for furnishing, illumination and inspiration in interior design through outstanding details from beginning to end. The Coal Office is Tom Dixon’s new headquarters and flagship store, located in King’s Cross, London’s largest developing intersection. The building’s history has been incorporated into the design, with the original brick façade and foundational archways kept intact. Formerly a coal office in the 1850’s, the building was used to transfer coal to the canal and distributed around London. Historical architecture is combined with modern furniture, lighting and accessories to create a design mecca in the heart of London.
