Studio Chateau: From Iconic Recording Studio to Sustainable Home

A unique and sustainable home has risen where iconic music was once recorded. Studio Chateau, the former recording studio of VOF de Kunst (where artists such as Guus Meeuwis and the Beach Boys recorded albums) has been given a second life. Interior architect Nina van As and her partner have spent the past eight years carefully transforming this space into a remarkable home, keeping the musical history alive in subtle ways.

Reuse and acoustics as a guiding principle
Sustainability was at the heart of this transformation. Original studio elements have been repurposed: the acoustic ceiling panels were reused as wall finishes, while the insulation from the lowered ceiling found a new place in the partition walls. The characteristic concrete floor has been preserved, and the radiators have been ingeniously built in. Everything in this house is either custom built from second hand materials or is a second hand product, carefully creating a sustainable contemporary home.

Light and space
The former recording area has been turned into a bright patio with access to a spacious rooftop terrace. This not only brings in extra daylight but also creates an open and airy atmosphere. In the kitchen and living area, no high wall cabinets were used, enhancing the sense of space. A cooling drawer replaces the traditional refrigerator.

A nod to the past
The design pays homage to the studio’s history with subtle references: the classic wooden slat ceiling and the signature carpeted walls have been reinterpreted in a modern way. Additionally, Nina van As designed custom lighting to highlight the concrete ceiling in a unique manner.

Sustainable technology
In addition to the use of reclaimed materials, the entire house now operates sustainably with a modern air heating system, solar panels, a heat pump, a home battery, and a charging station for the electric car, combining architectural heritage with state of the art green technology.
