What is Soil Studios concept/style? Fearless, experimental, creative…These are the words that come to mind when describing our studio. When we start a new project, it’s as if we a plant a glistening new seed into the ground. We then help the seed to thrive, grow, adapt and eventually transform into something extraordinary. Just as the natural world needs soil to grow and flourish, our studio aims to enrich people’s lives by designing meaningful spaces.

Why did you open Soil Studios?
Design isn’t just about material objects but it’s about a way of seeing the world. We wanted to create something new and meaningful… something sustainable and eco-conscious.

What is Soil Studios concept/style?
Like a force of nature, we aim to create designs that breathe new life into spaces and make them expressive and dynamic.

Where you're inspired?
Our landfills are piling up. We want to find creative ways to reinvent and resurrect discarded materials from leftover marble to scraps of wood. There are endless possibilities to sustainable, ethical interior design.

What makes Soil Studio different?
Our aim is to spark a new conversation and raise awareness about eco-conscious design. We hope to make a statement and have an impact on the next generation of young Hong Kong designers.

Design for thought Although designing with only upcycled materials is not always doable. It certainly is something to learn from. Something to remember and to keep in mind whenever looking at materials that will be trashed unless we design a new life for them.

When we were designing our studio office, we have visited a marble factory in the outskirts of Hong Kong and seeing a pile of leftovers marble just sitting there for decades. We have found a beautiful piece of terrazzo and decided to give it a second life. From it we have designed our cabinet top and a few bespoke wooden trays for display.

Another interesting often discarded material we find at the marble factory is the plank wood that they use for cutting marbles. The plank woods age beautifully with cuts and grains from the marble cutter and in the end we have turn them into beautiful display shelves. Instead of throwing away as trash we can always reuse and give them a meaningful second life.

Last but not least, a sustainable material we use is the clay-based plaster which is 100% natural, absorbs toxins, zero VOC emission, low embodied carbon, 100% compostable and recyclable. Clay works was born from the founders’ love of nature and their belief in natural, sustainable building practices; and to foster a balance in building that is healthy for the environment and the user, while beautiful in its design.
