Chief Designer

With the vision of being hidden in the city, the Suitable Space Design team designed their own office which was also the chief designer’s villa in Xi’an, China. Starting from a compound commercial space design concept, the transformed 500-square-meter and 4-story villa had more commercial compounding possibilities in space, serving as an office, salon, home-stay, and party space. The forward-looking design method enriched the flexibility and complexity of the space. Named Raw White, the project adopted a white palette to ensure more possibilities in blank space and to create a spiritual world for the users. Taken advantage of the special sunken courtyard, all the non-load-bearing structures between the backyard and the indoors were replaced by the partition walls with glass to maximize the sunlight into the interior. Based on the original long layout, the division walls were dismantled to integrate each small function area, making the space open and transparent. As for the reception area and boss office, the flexible layout and arrangement of the furnishings made the space more convenient and individual. In terms of lighting design, the ground light was used as the main light source, and the top spotlight was used as the auxiliary light source, creating a different space atmosphere when the light’s on. The special shape of the staircase was like a crack in the city buildings. The stairs and mirrors were blended to create a virtual space path, adding fun to space when combined with the lighting. The ground floor was designed as the main working area, which was divided into two main functional areas through different heights. The desks and chairs and public communication space met the basic need of working space. The space in the atrium was used to design a representative spatial structure, just like the edge of the city wall. The area built with stairs and partition walls became a symbol of pure white spirit. As the supporting space for the office, the second floor was planned as a space for meetings and reception. Besides, the home-stay layout was specially planned to form a composite commercial space. Different heights of floor slabs were used to divide the different functions of the home-stay space. The stair handrail connecting between 1F and 2F was made of customized steel wire. The pure white staircase, allowed the originally narrow stairwell to have more space under safe conditions. From the first floor to the third floor, the stairs of each floor were made of different materials and methods in handrails, representing different stages of life. The handrail of the underground floor was the most solid half-height partition wall, like the epitome of the city and the thickest foundation of life. The first-floor staircase was surrounded by steel wire, which was like the growth of life, and the creativity was growing in the constant pull. And the third floor adopted transparent glass to make the space lighter and thinner while bringing more safety and purity. At the beginning of the design, the design team discussed with the client and determined the commercial considerations of a compound feature. One space was used to bring two or more types of space business value. Whether it is considered from the horizontal space use on the time axis, or the vertical space use of the changing scene, the essence of composite space design is to maximize the consideration of commercial operations between the use of space and commercial value.
