Creating sacred boundary Kekkai (Bai sema) is a boundary made between sacred spaces and the other areas. It is not just a boundary that is made only by drawing a line, it provides a feeling of stepping into a sacred space. This kekkai/boundary is a result of client’s wish for the visitors to face each individual plant by having high consciousness and sensitivity. This plant gallery was planned in an existing house with a yard built on residential area. The plan was to create a gallery that has an atmosphere separated from ordinary street. The idea was to create a gallery space where two domains, which are the gallery elements abstracted from the surrounding environment and everyday life, were placed next to each other. The dismantled space is painted in white, so that plants would be seen as the main element in the gallery space, and also this space was made to coexist with the everyday situation with unorganised information. This lets these two spaces to mutually reinforce each other, and it even let ordinarily view to become apparent while focusing on the unique plants. A body emerges by abstraction, unusual emerges by usual. High contrasted boundaries made by two worlds emphasise the mystique of unique plants. This place allows to face the plants as art pieces with pure feeling. We believe that designing relationships and always thinking of opposite will bring us closer to the essence s; just as there is darkness to create lightness and smallness to define how big things are. We believe that thinking about relationships will lead to the creation of new possibilities for space.
