The spatial design of MUDA-Architects' new office was aimed to reconsider the concept of poetic space in physical form in the aspects of openness, comfort, and intellectualization. The main consideration for the spatial design was comfort. To begin with, MUDA selected the untreated wood color as the base and performed it with different materials on the ceiling, floor, and interior wall. Meanwhile, we left the concrete columns in their bare state since it projects a sense of potency and time. Warm-white office tables in the combination with the well-designed furniture system and flexible space divisions revitalize the space, the whole office looks like a pacifying and inspiring contemporary Shan-Shui Painting. An open and inclusive working environment always generates better designs. MUDA-Architects wanted the office to be not only a place to work but also a space for employees to relax and interact. Abandoning the traditional design of a low-efficiency meeting room, MUDA's meeting room could accommodate different activities such as salon, entertainment (ping-pong), party, model making, material demo, and storage. The meeting room is indeed the most popular space in the whole office nowadays. In pre-renovated condition, the mechanical equipment occupies almost 1m of the 4.2m floor height. To rebuild the order and invigorate the space, MUDA first removed all the standardized furnishings of the original office and then added the suspended ceiling with a wood grain square tube. In this way, the primitive floor height was preserved, and a well-organized spatial texture was achieved. Intelligent office design is one of the key features MUDA achieved. The lighting system in the public area was composed of 400 smart LED light bulbs. The light temperature and intensity of every single smart LED light bulb could be remotely controlled by a smartphone application with precision. Moreover, the lighting presets enable the office space to freely and automatically switch between daytime mode, lunch break mode, nighttime mode, meeting mode, presentation mode, party mode, or any mode specifying special occasions. As different lighting temperatures and intensities affect how people feel and function, our body automatically responds to different lights. Once our physical bodies accommodate different lighting in work and rest, we naturally work better and rest better. A fusion of technology, functionality, and aesthetics has been accomplished. The lighting design of the new office is an exploration of the positive impact of smart technology on daily living. It is also an experimental exploration of the combination of health, green, and energy-saving. MUDA-Architects will continue to explore the many possibilities of intelligent design in future projects.
