This project is a special shop where two brands, MAISON SPECIAL and PRANK PROJECT run by PLAY PRODUCT STUDIO CO.,LTD coexist within one two-floor building.
In building originally used as a restaurant, with a large atrium and impressive natural light pouring in through the triangular roof skylight, the first floor was designated MAISON SPECIAL and the second floor PRANK PROJECT, giving a sense of the identity of each brand.
The city of Fukuoka, where this building is located, has a calm inner bay topography centred on Hakata Bay, with fishing and maritime ports, and fertile plains suitable for rice cultivation, where rural settlements were formed and urban culture was supported from early on. Also, there are different character cities that have formed and developed in layers, attracting people and serving as a hub of goods and people.
Based on the characteristic of Fukuoka's location and historical background, aiming of attracting people and becoming a hub of goods and people with diverse elements.
MAISON SPECIAL on the first floor is the 10th MAISON SPECIAL shop in the country,  with each shop creating a different design space, reflecting the characteristics and attractions of each region in its concept.
By deconstructing/reinterpreting Maison Special’s brand concept, “SPECIAL IS YOUR STANDARD”, the interior concept of the space was created to question the ordinary daily life that we take for granted, to turn the ordinary and the extraordinary, and to allow us to see the extraordinary (SPECIAL) in the ordinary daily life (STANDARD).
Our discussion focused on how to find new perspective and value  by allowing current situations, keeping original elements as much as possible as they are, maximising the potential of original building.
For areas lacking functions or materials, not to overwrite or create a new design, but to respect the existings, adding new elements on them to connect the new to the existing design. The original wood floor to make stools, bench, fixtures. As a result, this idea reduced the waste during dismantling and eliminated unnecessary production.
The design inspiration of the second floor is explored through the playful spirits in the brand's concept word, ‘PRANK’.
In contrast to the first floor, we reduced elements as much as possible and focused on conveying the dynamic scale of the space by planning a walnut curved wall which lasts for 11 m and a 6 m high curtain.
This extra-ordinal way of using materials that are unnecessarily scaled out creates distortions in stereotypes and leads to the brand's unique world view.
All of the furniture in the space is a masterpiece designed by super designers of the 20th century, but these designs may have initially been the result of playful spirits. What is born out of playfulness can be transformed over time into real value.
Coexisting contemporary design furniture and fixtures that imply ‘PRANK’ and masterpieces of furniture, a story is told in which ideas are sublimated into value.
