The spacious work loft on the second floor of a commercial rear building in Berlin-Kreuzberg consists of a work studio and a smaller living area with a bathroom. User is an artist who creates his demanding works here and needs an inspiring environment for it. The design of the work loft takes into account the fact that works are not only created here but also presented, so the room has several large sliding doors that are suitable to be used as partition and presentation walls. The space is characterised by the sanded mastic asphalt and the large steel glass wall oriented towards the kitchen. The built-in kitchen is a custom-made design, consisting of a metal frame with panels made of stained timber and linoleum. The majestic open fireplace is made of dark bricks and blends in well with the room. In the adjoining lounge area studio karhard® has used a light wooden floor; together with the brightly paneled ceiling, a contemplative and friendly atmosphere is created here. Particular attention has been paid to the design of the stairs up to the roof terrace. This is an elaborate construction made of perforated metal sheet above a built-in cabinet. The bathroom area’s main material is high-grade terrazzo, which has been installed as on-site terrazzo for the floor area and as panel terrazzo made of the same material for the walls. This creates a homogeneous overall impression with a high-quality yet not cool atmosphere. The innovative design of the interior staircase that leads up to the roof terrace is striking. It’s steps evolve from the floor as a wooden construction and merge into a sheet steel construction above a built-in wardrobe. The steps at the top end are made from perforated sheet metal to allow the light to fall through the roof window. Even though the combination of on-site terrazzo and panel terrazzo in the bathroom was a challenge for architects and manufacturers, in the end it led to a coherent overall picture. Another unique feature are the space-dividing sliding walls with a height of over three metres, that can be used as presentation walls for the artist’s works. The workloft combines different uses from workspace to kitchen to relaxation area, all of which differ from one another in terms of design and create individual room atmosphere despite the application of very few but strongly related materials. For example, a second brick layer has been put in front of an existing brick facade in the relaxation area.
