Located in Chengdu, China, the Kuansan Town restaurant resides next to one of the most sacred Daoist temples in the Sichuan Province, Qingyang Palace. Inspired by the multi-centuries cultural heritages and the well-protected historical architecture, the design of Kuansan Town is formulated on the extraction of ancient Chinese Philosophy Daoism. According to Laozi, the founder of the philosophical Daoism and deity of religious Daoism, the 'valley' is the place of all births, it is autopoiesis and its self-generation mechanism is endless. In the Daoist philosophy of life and the Universe, the relationship between Valley and Water is vivid, eternal, and vital. MUDA-Architects extracted the depiction of 'valley' and interpreted it into the architecture through the application of 'water' to rebuild the sense of place. The south entrance is the starting point for the entire design, we, therefore, entitled it after the Daoism term "the gate of primordial origin ”, where it is the realm of primitive origin for all living and non-living beings. Whereas the east entrance connects the project and the Qingyang Palace, like a tunnel linking history and the present day. We named it “the gate of multiple subtleties ”, expecting it to bring an unpredictable wonder experience to people. Following the principle of “Dao and Nature”, we restore the architecture to its natural state by adding a miniature landscape with a pond and three floating islands. Inspired by the ancient Chinese cosmography of "round sky and flat earth", we re-design the courtyard with an irregular-shaped pond and extended the spiral staircase to the second floor for a softer yet bold spectacle for the skyline. Manifesting the venue's history, we applied Tang Dynasty elements to the overall interior space through the use of color, material, ornamental forms, etc to create a comprehensive style for various private rooms. We emphasized creating an imposing space for the VIP rooms while focusing on the flexibility of the continuous private rooms that allow the restaurant to serve different numbers of guests with an equal level of privacy. The garden rooms established interaction with the exceptional natural environment, taking advantage of the prized natural scenery of Qingyang Palace to be in harmony with the landscape. By extracting Daoism philosophy and expressing it in a contemporary way, we are able to perfectly integrate the restaurant's interior space with the existing natural landscape. Through borrowed scenery, creating scenery, and framing scenes through the windows, visitors can expect to glimpse delicately composed and framed scenery at various angles and perspectives, unrolling like a scroll of landscape painting. Changing sceneries elucidate physical and mental enlightenment with every step wandering through the winding path of Kuansan Town restaurant.
