Gemdale Dachengyajing Sales Center is located in the South New Town area of Nanjing. EH DESIGN GROUP applied the concept of “city museum” to its design, trying to energize the city with architecture and create a modern, open and humanistic “new Nanjing” lifestyle. City Museum - Lattice and Box: Tradition and Modernity The view, the building and the interior design echo and match one another. Modern minimalist “boxes” that resemble viewing windows are subtly distributed at key points throughout the space, providing a kind of sequential experience for visitors.Entering the room, one will see a kinetic multimedia art display, presenting an Oriental landscape using multimedia in a creative way. The strip shape serves to guide people’s attention towards the horizontal window, which offers a view of the scenery outdoors; the depth, layers and shadows together create a poetic cultural space. Borrowing the traditional Chinese architecture concept of “lattice”, the designers fused historical elements with the modern art of Nanjing. Each line, each space ratio, and each detail of the design are the result of deep consideration. Following the visiting route, the lattice on the ceiling extends to the sand table area, giving a panoramic experience to visitors and clear order to the space. The lighting in a museum is usually hidden. Taking this into account, the designers deliberately arranged the angle of light over the visiting route, controlling the rhythm of light and shade. The heavy use of natural light also contributes to giving the space a museum’s sense of grandiosity. The ceiling lattice above the sand table area was replaced by a dynamic device posed so as to give off the impression of flight, echoing the spirit of Dajiaochang Airport which used to exist in the same area. Natural Growth - People among the Grass and Trees In the atrium, the designers used borrowed sceneries and metaphors embedded within the details to express the idea of “growth”. In the negotiation area, vibrant greens were used frequently to provide a strong visual impact and further highlight the theme. Unconventional in dimension, the water bar resembles a horizontal scroll painting placed at the main facade of the negotiation area, realizing a poetic expression with natural materials. The designers intended to create a more transparent space with less materials. Tough and pragmatic stone, modern and fashionable metal, hidden and simple lighting—all these elements work together to draw the outline of a modern city with tension and taste. Layers upon layers of artistically rendered lacquer lines draw visitors’ attention outside, adding more space levels to the open layout. The stone, metal and wooden materials create a free atmosphere for the negotiation area.Mixing the classical aesthetic values of “seclusion, modesty and gentleness” with “future city” concepts, the designers tried hard to realize the fusion of modern and traditional modes of expression in architecture. The indoor and outdoor spaces don’t have a boundary to limit sunshine and scenery. The 270 degrees of transparent walls in the negotiation area realize a stunning visual result, with the interconnection of spaces being the effect the designers set out to create. In this place, people can feel the quietness of nature and the strength of natural growth, and can so be affected by the atmosphere of the space. It is a profound experience. As Wu Jingxiong, a scholar during the period of the Republic of China (1912–1949), once said: “We are not heading westward or eastward, but inward, because deep in our soul, the holy noumenon is hidden. That is our true home.”
