Kangyi Yard, Changde Road 1344 lane is located in Shanghai Putuo District with convenient transportation and entertainment facilities. The apartment is 73 sqm in floor size, and the usable space is 54 sqm. The design is practical and aligned with the owner’s daily routine. This case was a second-hand apartment, and we have retained the original basic apartment structure. We intentionally removed the door sill, elevated the ground, and left storage space to improve the space's functionality. To separate the room, we decided to use different colors for sectioning: kitchen and restroom are mainly cool tones of grey to give a sense of calm. In the Living room and bedroom, we use warm colors to add vitality to daily life. On the creativity front, we made a few artistic decorations to enhance the overall quality. Since the room is not spacious, we combined the living room with the dining room, yet we also used details in ceilings and the floor to separate these two functions. For example, on the floor, we use wood and cement for such separation. In the living room, we added a U-shaped curtain rail. On regular days, these curtains can be placed behind the sofa as background. If the householder’s family or friends come to visit and need to stay over, the curtains can open and turn the space into a guest room. We installed a hidden projector on the ceiling for television and video games entertainment. When somebody opened the U-shaped curtains during the day, the living room would be like a small home theater. With the Semi-open sofa, the space is suitable for solitude and relaxation. The inclusive and flexible design allows residents to divide or combine the living room and dining room as their needs. The flexibility of spatial planning reflects innovation and functionality. In our opinion, space is not a single and fixed existence; it could be multi-functional and adjustable. The primary color scheme of the living room is Light-gray, Tourmaline, and Red-ochre. We arranged the velvet Brown-ochre sofa against the wall. The TV background wall is decorated with geometric elements and a custom-made vase, making the room more creative, attractive, and aesthetic. The energetic elements also appeal to newborn. Transitioning from the dining room to the bedroom, we made a children-friendly, customized cabinet to improve the functionality. A fireplace is embedded in the cabinet; the cabinet can be used as a storage space, adding a peaceful atmosphere to the area. The artsy paintings, fruit plates, aromatherapy all work together to create this comfortable, simple, yet stylish space. Besides, a round table can save space and sit with more people. The formerly vacant corridor was utilized and turned into a laundry area to meet functional needs. The decorative mirror matched with the geometric patterns on the wall and the overall style of the room. The whole flat was creatively decorated. The bedroom and living room's color theme is almost identical; we use the same colors to create a warm living environment. In the bedroom, we use the same geometric elements from the living room as wall decoration. A custom-made cabinet, which includes wardrobes, bookcases (display cabinet), and a desk: tremendously increased the storage space. The bedside and the headboard are a one-piece design, adding a modern touch to the bedroom: a black glass lamp and leather cushion emphasize the room's modernity. The arch leading to the balcony is full of the taste of old Shanghai. The kitchen is on the right side of the entrance. There is a window leading to the outside corridor, which is convenient for cooking. To fit into Shanghai's fast-paced life, we used a shower instead of a bathtub for the bathroom. We choose Dark gray and Thai curry for the restroom, highlighting the owner's taste in detail and meeting his needs. In the overall design, we want to make the relationship between people and space unadulterated. In a busy metropolis, a home is where people can slow down and enjoy their lives. There is no over decoration, no accumulation of luxury goods, but filled with current and popular sustainability elements. The design begins with the owner's most essential needs, ends with the inclusivity of those who live here. On this basis, we simply want to add decoration, improve the quality of life rather than overconsumption.
