Inspired by a song from Pink Floyd's 1970 repertoire, "beECHOES" seeks to resonate sound and create echoes, much like its namesake. Leveraging this as their springboard, LSD embarked on a design journey, from spatial concepts to material selection and the intricate detailing of every visible fixture and fitting. Their design ethos aims to resurrect the halcyon days of a backstreet era, where life's hardships and pleasures intertwined. In doing so, they envisioned creating a sanctuary that invites profound conversation and spiritual resonance.
In sketching the blueprint for this space, LSD Interior Design eschewed the conventional tags that often confine style. Instead, LSD focused on the human scale of interaction within the environment, the tactile warmth of materials, and the subtle glimmers that bounce off well-lit wood. Through these authentic elements, LSD hoped to stir visitor curiosity, and in turn, create an experience that melds sensory delight and intellectual gratification.
People's movements and sightlines within this space are not the result of aimless meandering but rather, they are the outcome of thoughtful design. The designers scrutinized the space from varying vantage points and at different times, intent on offering a comprehensive journey that culminates in a cohesive, personalized experience.
If one considers the wall layout as the skeletal framework of the space, then the materials that overlay these surfaces form its "skin". The inherent qualities of these materials, through their interplay, unfold into a tapestry of nuanced micro-expressions. Glass, naturally cold, is transformed through coarse sanding and wooden framing. The result is a soft, yellow glow that hints at transparency, invoking the feeling of a shoji door.
Beneath the black metal exterior wall, wood wraps around to create a lengthy bench. The dark red wood, treated to retain a touch of roughness, exudes a quality akin to sturdy red bricks. It presents an inviting warmth, encouraging passersby to pause for a moment of casual conversation. Extending from the side of the building is a metal eave, leading the way to an "inner courtyard" enveloped by verdant greenery. This area, reminiscent of a tranquil street garden, is perfumed by the nearby cooking and a subtle note of wine, extending a welcoming invitation to all.
The ambiance of the space is a composite of the feelings each material evokes. The interior and exterior walls of the restaurant, clad in similar materials, intensify the sensory connection to the materials, thereby enhancing the patrons' physical connection to the culinary philosophy. This careful selection simultaneously creates a harmony between the materials of the dining utensils and the patrons, establishing a unison of taste, touch, and perception.
