Following a reinvention of ALDI’s Australian portfolio & invention of their Chinese one, Landini were engaged to create a small-format localised concept for the global grocery chain.
“ALDI Corner Store” is a “15-Minute City” model, reducing bi-weekly specials, adding ready to-eat-meals, artisanal bakery offerings & excellent take-away coffee. Launched in 2021 & since rolled out nationally, stores currently delight communities in Nth Sydney, Darlinghurst, Roseberry, Newtown, Melbourne CBD, Prahran & Fitzroy.
Reinventing Local
How do you challenge the predictable norms of “Hello Roseberry”, tasteful neighbourhood photography, and signs declaring location, to invent a fresher, wittier tone; one that’d make you smile? How do you make a Global Brand genuinely local, recognizably ALDI, yet uniquely different? Perhaps with an art infused celebration of community that fosters local. A Place for People.
Good, Different
Operationally this model needed to be more flexible, modular & adaptive than ever before. The urban locations demanded a move from constructing new to refurbishing existing building stock. By taking the store to the customer’s homes, Landini found inspiration from this adaptive requirement to inform a personalized approach to its voice.
Consistent, unique, yet genuinely Local
Starting with ALDI’s “Good Different” mantra, Landini’s concept rejects the bland corporate vanilla of so many retailers to deliver a brave new customized approach, a bold move for a global brand. To benefit from operational efficiencies, the base building material palette, fixtures & signage are uniform, whilst emerging artist's hand paint artworks delight & surprise.
These colourful collaborations, not limited to one wall, infuse the entire space with fun, promote neighbourhood wellbeing, and support ALDI’s proposition of amazing quality at the best possible prices. The solution ensures Corner Store is memorably ALDI, memorably unique, whilst raising the bar for what Local shopping could be.
Art for Everyone
Store murals are translated into staff-workwear, that teams willingly wear, as well as limited-edition shopping bags to collect & take-home; simultaneously yet discretely recognising, ALDI’s commitment to corporate responsibility & environment.
Sustainability
Corner Store embraces recyclable materials & renewable energy; however low embodied energy is the most meaningful way that design can impact our futures.
This means designing places that are not disposable or informed by trends, places of unlimited lifespan with functional & emotional relevance. Real places for real people. An emphasis on urban locations takes the store to the customer, sustainably refurbishing existing buildings as opposed to constructing new.
The design also celebrates ALDI’s dedication to corporate responsibility, recent delivery of 100% renewable electricity across all operations, and their commitment to send zero-waste to landfill by 2025. It also makes you smile!
