In China, how to meet the individual needs of the general population for housing is the way we hope to try. So, I experimented with my own home, which is a very common three-bedroom apartment in China, and I wanted to transform it into a two-bedroom space that meets my personal needs and has more open space.

Before the design, I analyzed the experience of using the space, and according to their openness and use, they are often divided into four types of spaces, namely open short-term use space, open long-term use space, closed short-term use space, and closed long-term use space. I wanted to reduce the size of the enclosed space as much as possible and try to connect the open spaces together to create a larger open space.

In the first step, all non-load-bearing structures are removed, and the planar functions are reclassified.

The second step is to increase the connectivity of the space. The entrance is added to increase the buffer space between the indoor and outdoor areas, while forming a spatial contrast with the living room, while the glass bricks of the children's room bring outdoor light to the entrance, and the door opening on the wall increases the visual communication between the living room and the entrance. Between the tearoom and the living room, we use a suspended projection wall to separate the two, so that the vision of the living room and dining room can be extended from the tearoom to the outdoor terrace, and the independence of the two spaces is retained.

The third step is the exploration of functionality. In the children's room, we made a bunk bed using the ceiling height to minimize the footprint of the bed and increase the space for the little ones. In the master bedroom, an open cloakroom is enclosed by a fixed wardrobe, an open hanger and a dressing table, and the aisle between them is also the aisle on the side of the bed.

The fourth step is the re-arrangement of the indoor circulation line and the use of the aisle. Originally, the entrance to the terrace was in the living room of the round apartment, which is now the children's room, which would lead to privacy problems, so we removed the original windows of the tea room and made a glass box that stretched out to the terrace, which not only extended the area of the tea room, but also served as a new entrance to the terrace, ensuring the privacy of the children's room.

The fifth step is the re-arrangement of the ceiling. Because the original house structure has been changed, the beams on the ceiling of the adjusted space are intricate. To this end, according to the position of the beam, we deliberately lower the ceiling of the dynamic space, and make the ceiling of the static space as high as possible.

In the end, I think that in the current environment of China, a large number of industrialized commercial housing is the only living choice for most ordinary people, and how to meet the individual needs of some of them is one of the directions we continue to explore.
