VOICE509 is an “exhibition room for learning from failure” planned as part of a cultural reform initiative to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, based on lessons learned from inappropriate conduct related to product inspections that occurred within the company.
Promoting learning from past failures is more challenging than simply sharing information. The key lies in fostering empathy rather than merely disseminating facts.
The inappropriate actions were rooted in various emotional and psychological factors stemming from the company's culture, systems, and established practices. So we focused on the 'voices' of the people involved in the inappropriate behavior, the surrounding groups, and the media and public response.
“Voices” represent people's emotions, perspectives, and values. We believed that these voices possess the power to appeal to human emotions beyond mere information.
Through meticulous research, we collected various voices from both inside and outside the company and categorized them into ‘external voices’ and ‘internal voices.’ The exhibition begins with a collage of ‘public voices’ from newspapers, and as visitors proceed further, the ‘voices’ of those involved at the time are expressed through sound, light, and graphics. The spatial composition is designed to gradually deepen the viewer's sense of involvement, moving from an objective perspective to a subjective one, and by conveying the details of the situation after this process, we aimed to create an “learning experience” accompanied by empathy.
The exhibition, which focuses on the inner workings of past misconduct that a company would want to hide, particularly the psychological aspects behind it, represents a challenging approach for the client.
However, simply revising rules or systems is insufficient to change people's emotions. This exhibition is not merely a cautionary tale but provides an opportunity for viewers to deeply reflect on the issues as if they were their own.
Sharing this kind of learning contributes to the formation of organizations that are trusted in the long term, and to the prevention of fraud in society as a whole.
