Traditional retail faces challenges from changing consumer behavior, urbanization and digitalization — including the increasingly important subject of eCommerce. But where uncertainty reigns, there is also scope for new ideas. One of these is the holistic approach of Shared Spaces. Shared Spaces is a concept within traffic planning formed by Hans Mondermann, which we applied to retail. In this context it means the innovative merging of different retail sectors — both in terms of their location and service. We believe that the future of retail resides in a more collaborative, modular and shared use of retail space that blends different product categories, functions, experiences and values. We took this design philosophy as our starting point to design a 1000m2 trade show stand at EuroShop 2020 for three giants of retail shop-fitting, Ansorg, Visplay and Vizona. Result was a modular retail environment where the different core categories of beauty, mobility, fashion and food overlapped and collided with each other to deliver an explosion of new ideas. FOOD X BEAUTY -> An in-store repair workshop using mushroom leather BEAUTY X MOBILITY –> A refreshment bar delivering drinks tailored to your mood. MOBILITY X BEAUTY –> A fragrance installation with perfume inspired by industrial production BEAUTY X FASHION -> A herb garden for localized production of food and beauty products. By blurring the boundaries between industries that once remained isolated, we present how something exciting and new can grow from openness and unification. Exploring all the senses – taste, smell, sight, sound, and touch – we show how retail can create genuinely meaningful, multi-sensory moments that excite customers like never before. The guiding principle for the design was transparency, fluidity and flexibility. Within the booth, we avoided walls and worked with subtle borders, such as columns, stairs and roofs to define our spaces. Using customizable lighting and modifiable retail fixtures, the spaces could be re-organized without larger effort. The layout was simple. We organized all 4 core retail categories around an inner courtyard. We used a unique col-or-coding to support the larger narration by appointing one distinct color to each category. At the four “overlaps” between the core categories, we staged the individual installations of the Shared Spaces and highlighted them by suspended ceilings in our color-coding. Result was a unique and highly frequented booth (one in three visitors of EuroShop visitors entered our both and stayed in average over one hour) that redefined what is possible within a traditional store environment. - - - Criteria: Innovation: Shared Spaces as an unique solution for uncertainty within the retail sector. Creativity: Creation of four strong sensory experiences at the overlap between Fashion, Mobility, Beauty and Food. Functionality: Open space layout, flexible light-systems and modular retail systems, that are designed specifically for everchanging functions. Sustainability: Conceptually, the core idea of Shared Spaces is to avoid tearing down, re-building and refurnishing and thereby has an enormous effect on saving resources. Secondly, we used as many organic and recycled mate-rials as possible, naming only a few: Kvadrat Really Board for all shelves and signage, sheep wool for sound isolation, cork, linoleum and sisal for flooring and organoid for larger parts of the beauty area . Thirdly, all retail systems and lighting was re-used by our partners. And finally, the booth was designed to be taken apart and partly moved to the showroom of our partners in Weil am Rhein. Inclusivity: The basic concept of Shared Spaces builds on inclusion, cooperation, the peaceful co-existence of very different people and their needs within the same space. The idea is to overthink and remove old, accustomed barriers to why not sharing space. On a more functional level, the whole booth was obviously wheel-chair friendly. Special care was put into creating multi-sensory installations, that could be understood and experienced universally.
