Spanning 30 acres along Vainguinim Beach in Panaji, Goa, Cidade de Goa is an iconic 201-key resort originally designed by Charles Correa in 1982. Inspired by Goa’s Portuguese heritage, Correa envisioned a traditional coastal hamlet with interconnected pathways, intimate courtyards, and spatial storytelling.
By 2020, decades of ad-hoc changes had compromised the resort’s integrity. Under the Taj Hotels banner, Studio IV Designs was entrusted with the restoration—aiming to honour Correa’s architectural language while introducing a refreshed interior identity rooted in Indo-Portuguese culture. Phase 1 included 91 guest rooms and key public areas.
Despite freedom to redesign, the team preserved signature elements like the chequered black-and-white granite and kota floors, and herringbone Jaisalmer marble. The otla near reception was updated with Azulejo-patterned tiles and microconcrete. Artist Vijay Bhandari returned to restore and add trompe-l’œil murals, preserving visual continuity. Even the facade colours—Tuscan Orange, Yellow Ochre, and Warm Peach—were carefully matched.
Interiors were reimagined with Azulejos blue, custom furnishings evoking 1940s Portuguese-Goan styles, and hand-painted ceiling details. Every element—from textiles to tiles—reflected cultural authenticity. Blue vitrified tiles with Azulejo-inspired motifs, lime-washed plaster, and detailed wood finishes brought depth and harmony to the spatial experience.
Climate responsiveness was improved through redesigned skylights and the transformation of an open courtyard into a Lobby Lounge with diffused light. The Sea Lounge was enclosed with sliding doors, enhancing usability. The old Doçaria coffee shop became a library-style lounge with lime-washed walls and timeless furniture.
Operational upgrades included doubling the Taverna Deck’s capacity, enhancing accessibility via new ramps and compliant staircases, and using durable, low-maintenance materials across semi-open zones. Guest rooms, retaining their village-like charm, were redesigned in three palettes—earth orange, green, and blue—featuring bespoke furniture, curated art, and the iconic Sun of Cidade motif. Each room was thoughtfully designed to maintain a calm, expansive feel and draw attention to the stunning views outside.
Corridors featured floor-specific graphic identities by artist Hitesh Pankar—Sun of Cidade, Lion of Cidade, Rooster, and Ixora flower—reflected in custom tile patterns. These motifs were also seen in handcrafted ceramic room number plates made by Goan artisans, reinforcing locality. A white painted arch frames custom artwork in each room, referencing Fontainhas’ arched windows and offering a playful nod to Goa’s colourful lanes.
Studio IV Designs’ sensitive restoration and innovation celebrate Cidade de Goa’s original spirit while preparing it for the future. It’s a tribute to enduring design, balancing heritage with contemporary hospitality excellence.
