This monument embodies the essence of life science, based on the genome sequence of DNA-the foundation of life itself. The genome holds the memory of life from its origins to the present. To express this, the monument integrates natural objects that have nurtured humanity, traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and items from Chugai’s former research laboratories. By reflecting on the origins of both humanity and Chugai, the monument reveals the mysteries of life science through accumulated human memories.
Innovation
Chugai Pharmaceutical’s new research lab required a symbol that embodies the mysteries of life science, which researchers explore daily.
Just as scientists decode the human genome to create medicines, we derived the monument’s design from the genome itself. By integrating natural materials that represent "Life" and technological materials shaped by human hands as "Science," we expressed the intricate relationship between nature and innovation. This fusion of elements reflects the diversity of life sciences and serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities within the field.
Functionality
This monument serves as a source of inspiration for researchers, encapsulating countless memories of nature, technology, and culture that have shaped humanity. The viewer encounters a never-before-seen landscape, and their reflection becomes part of the monument, incorporating their presence into its evolving memory. By emphasizing that genomes exist within every person, the monument conveys the vast, unexplored potential of life sciences.
Creativity
The design of this monument was not drawn by a designer, but was created from the genome sequence of a human being. The pattern of the genome sequence drawn from the human genome is beautiful and gives us a sense of the mysterious beauty of life. The genome also contains a vast amount of information that makes up a person, which is the memory of the person accumulated through the process of evolution and the memory of the earth up to the present. We have incorporated the diverse memories that have nurtured people into the monument as a code of life science, and expressed the mystery of life science.
Eco-Social Impact
Many aspects of life sciences remain unknown, and scientists continue their work with the hope of improving human happiness. By materializing the unseen mysteries of life science, the monument serves as a spiritual encouragement for those working in the laboratory. Furthermore, the monument preserves memories of nature, technology, and culture, archiving disappearing techniques and materials for future generations.
It fosters awareness of sustainability by creating a landscape where diverse, often incompatible elements coexist. The project also embraced eco-conscious practices: wood scraps were repurposed into furniture, and metal materials were recycled.
