HAKU – Homestay in Sai Kung HAKU, the pronunciation of the Japanese character “泊” meaning stopover and anchorage, is a place where the owner hopes to escape from the hustle and bustle, spending the day with self-care and inner peace. From the screening at the entrance to the whole house, the design concept is based on the oriental philosophy of ‘round heaven and square earth’, where movement and stillness complement each other. Four oriental elements “Earth”, “White”, “Water” and “Sky” are used as the themes of the four storeys. The least amount of furniture is placed to keep the house minimal. The blankness creates a calming and relaxing space for the dweller. “Earth” – where everything grows, is the foundation of life. The ground floor is dedicated to the theme of “earth”, with grey tile as the main material and metal lines dividing the entrance and lounge area. The kitchen is fitted underneath the staircase to save space. Getting rid of superfluous furniture to keep the space simple clean, the only one is a multi-functional wall-mounted sideboard that can be pulled out to transform into a dining table. “White” – nothing but everything is still to happen. Stepping up to the first floor, the theme of “white” represents blankness. The open area with the tatami flooring can serve as a living room, bedroom, playroom… There is nothing but there can be anything, like a blank paper which can be drawn any colour. “Water” – flowing, clear, and the highest goodness. The second floor is entitled “Water”. Curve lines are applied to create a natural traffic flow. The cabinet door panels are covered with Japanese handmade indigo-dyed wallpaper, showing different shades of natural pigments by the flow of water. Pull down the bed hidden in the cabinet, take a rest and dive into the dreamland, where is always silent and peaceful. “Sky” – connect to infinite, broaden the mind. The theme of the roof terrace is "Sky", with the sunrise in the morning, the stars at night and the moon leading the tide to rise and fall. Immersing in the onsen is always the most relaxing and peaceful time of the day for the soul. At the most enjoyable moment under the wide sky, perhaps there will also be some inspiration from nature.
