INNOVATION Taking cues from FA’s collage based aesthetic, JMDS approached this retail project as a three dimensional collage, creating spaces that shift and rearrange themselves within mirrored surfaces as you move through the store. This project boldly embodies skate culture by referencing central ideas of movement, materiality, and street art. CREATIVITY For JMDS, the skateboards needed to stand as the project’s primary offering. To do this, we created a central spine that ran through the middle of the store, essentially splitting it in two. The front end of this spine was capped with a tall, narrow collage by Jason Dill, renowned skateboarder, artist, and Co Owner of FA. The back end of the spine angles out toward the primary circulation to announce itself. Here you find the point of sale counter, and the primary point of contact with the store staff (all skaters). With the board's vibrant artwork as the store’s primary feature, it was important that the interior backdrop be complementary rather than competitive; we achieved this by developing a custom finish and applying it to a building material often associated with skate stores: AC Plywood. The custom finish involved sandblasting the millwork to produce a dynamic texture or topography, then inking up the deepest grooves with a white paint and white washing the raised segments. This enabled FA’s brightly colored product to step forward. FUNCTIONALITY At the heart of the design is the “central spine”: consisting of a custom board wall and an angled POS display. The execution of the “Central Spine” is evident from the moment one enters - encountered by a three dimensional collage-inspired space that uses reflection and suspension to drive the visitor through the store. The board wall, seemingly floating in space, is a one of a kind piece, designed by JMDS to feature the FA & Hockey brand decks. The custom acrylic structure is inlayed into a ½” tempered glass wall with 1” polished acrylic mullions. Boards are displayed both in parallel and at a 35 degree rotation, in an alternating pattern; creating an optical effect that reads entirely differently as you move from one side of the space to the other. The brand’s identity is elevated by material choice and bold design moves. SUSTAINABILITY Across the scope of the project, it was important that we use simple materials like AC plywood, a decision highly driven with sustainability in mind; using a natural material that is prepared without depleting resources was key. Additionally, the many integrated mirrors allow for light to reflect and illuminate multiple surfaces without the need for strong, energy-consuming lights within the space. By staying true to the brand’s visuals and physical cues, FA NY expands the bounds of an interior space to be realized as a dynamic, three dimensional encounter.
