Preserving Heritage and Engaging with History
The Casa Degli Italiani, a Renaissance-style building with eclectic influences constructed between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, has undergone numerous transformations over time. The project by El Departamento aimed to preserve its essence—retaining its high wooden beam ceilings, vaulted structures, and decorative details—while adapting it to serve as a modern language academy. The intervention balanced the old and the new, ensuring the past was not erased but seamlessly integrated into the present, preserving and enhancing the memory of the space through architecture.

Spaces Inspired by Tradition
The interior design reinterprets Spanish culture and lifestyle, connecting the educational experience with the local context. Common areas, named "Tapas," were conceived as spaces for gathering and social interaction, echoing the Spanish tradition of sharing and conversing around a table. These spaces are distinguished by a bold yet harmonious color palette of burgundy, blue, and green, which introduces a contemporary flair while respecting the building's classical aesthetics.

"Siesta Spaces," designed as relaxation zones within the dynamic environment, complement the functional aspects of the academy. This innovative and balanced concept fosters well-being alongside productivity, creating a welcoming atmosphere for users.

Materials, Details, and Custom Furniture
To honor the historic character of the Casa Degli Italiani, El Departamento focused on restoring original features such as windows, doors, moldings, and ornamental details. The selection of rich materials paid homage to the building’s heritage, while custom-designed furniture was created to fit seamlessly into the space. These unique pieces, developed by the design team, serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, subtly modernizing the interiors without disrupting the historical narrative. The inclusion of greenery enhances its vitality, bringing a sense of freshness that complements the design.

Flexibility in Design and Execution
Flexibility was a guiding principle of the project, allowing the team to adapt to the uncertainties often encountered when rehabilitating historic structures. The approach embraced the imperfections of the original building, treating its scars and flaws as integral parts of the design. This mindset underscored the value of the building’s history and character, highlighting its unique narrative as a strength.

The new Expanish headquarters not only fulfills the functional demands of a language academy but also stands as an aesthetic and technical achievement that celebrates the history of Casa Degli Italiani. Through a respectful architectural intervention that maximizes natural light, integrates custom furniture, and incorporates greenery, the project exemplifies how restoration can honor the past while innovatively addressing the needs of the present and future.
