Situated in the iconic Jewel Changi Airport, amid a verdant fusion of retail, hospitality, and greenery, the Birds of Paradise (BoP) Jewel materialises a delightful experience. This boutique was inspired by a customer’s simple order: "Double scoop, please." This ignited the creation of a dome-like cocoon structure—an interplay of lime-washed surfaces and smooth curves—where customers could immerse themselves in a calming yet curious ambience, where the whimsicality of scooped spherical domes meets the elegance of minimalism.

Tasked to create a captivating, functional space within a compact 292 sqft area, we saw an opportunity in its airport location to engage with a diverse audience: from familiar locals to intrigued foreign travellers. The objective was to showcase the brand's unique offerings and leave a lasting impression through thoughtful design.

Two spherical domes set the scene, with the larger “heart” dome housing a glorious display of botanical gelato delights and the smaller “head” dome where the hourly spectacle of cone-making ensues.

The boutique's aesthetic is defined by soft, muted tones rendered with a lime-wash finish and warm, illuminated curves, evoking the delight of gelato. Minimal joint lines ensure a seamless look and feel, with the brand's signature recessed round-edge shelving featuring strip lights, beautifully illuminating a display of stacked takeaway cups.

The design of Birds of Paradise Jewel ingeniously addresses spatial constraints and stimulates audience engagement. It exemplifies the potential of innovative design and meticulous attention to detail in crafting a visually impactful and functional space, even within compact urban locations.

We devised a spherical structure that maximises the limited space while serving as an unforgettable representation of the brand and its gelato offerings. This novel approach optimises spatial use and creates a distinct visual identity, setting the store apart from its surroundings. Importantly, the angled domes ensure multi-directional visibility, establishing an eye-catching presence within the expansive mall.

BoP Jewel also manifests innovation through strategic material use and construction techniques. In alignment with Jewel Changi’s symbolization of a smart, sustainable Singapore, we deployed sustainable energy solutions. Our environmentally conscious selection of materials—lime wash, energy-saving LED lights, and recycled partition board construction—emphasises our commitment to innovative, environmental solutions without compromising our aesthetic vision.

Overall, BoP Jewel exhibits innovative thinking in tackling design challenges, whether spatial constraints, environmental considerations, or aesthetic aspirations. The blend of spherical structure, angled domes, and sustainable material choices culminate in a unique, functional, and environmentally responsible design, setting a new precedent in retail interior design.
