The 2018 Frame Awards culminated in a grand dinner on the evening of 21 February, as Frame founder Robert Thiemann announced the winners from almost 900 submissions by studios around the world. Following a nearly 6-month submission and nomination process, the sold-out Awards Show celebrated the work of the nominees – five in each category – selected by the prestigious jury of industry leaders. In addition, members of the press, VIPs and sponsors all contributed to a spectacular event in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek that brought Frame’s mission of promoting spatial design excellence to life.

Over the course of seven weeks, Frame’s international audience cast more than 18,000 votes for their favourite nominees, electing projects such as the Warehouse Hotel in Singapore and Collabor8 in Hamburg as the People’s Choice for Hotel of the Year and Co-Working Space of the Year respectively.

The Warehouse Hotel, Singapore, by Asylum Creative received the most votes in its category, winning the people’s vote for Hotel of the Year. To view all the winners, visit the Frame Awards website.

Meanwhile, the jury spent the day of 21 February evaluating and deliberating on the work of the nominees to decide the winners. The live judging was open to the public, and took place in a rapid, pecha kucha style format that saw spirited discussion between nominees and jury. The winners – announced at the spectacular Awards Show that same evening – include Uber Advanced Technologies Group, Pittsburgh by Assembly Design Studio for Large Office of the Year; New Shanghai Theatre, Shanghai by Neri&Hu Design and Research Office for Government Interior of the Year; Jut Group Lecture Hall, Taipei by MVRDV and Alexandra Kehayoglou Studio for Best Craftsmanship; and People’s Pavilion, Dutch Design Week 2017 by Overtreders W and Bureau Sla for the Sustainability Award. At the same time, experimental, unusual and emerging technologies and designs were presented all through the day at Frame Lab alongside talks by distinguished architects, creative entrepreneurs and seasoned professionals. Held over 21 and 22 February, Frame Lab renegotiates the concept of a trade fair and industry event with its revolutionarily fluid format that integrated the live judging of the Frame Awards nominees into its programme.

Lifetime Achievement Award winner Sevil Peach gave a talk on her prolific body of work from her 50-year journey creating collaborative workspaces that have become emblematic of modern, human-centric design. In the evening, Peach also formally accepted her Frame Awards trophy alongside the other Honorary Award winners.

The Frame Awards marks a new era for Frame, as the company expands beyond print publication and forges a new path in modern media and events with a fantastic production that adds a new physical dimension to the brand.
