This week’s most-viewed Frame Awards entries span hospitality, work and show typologies

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Every week we highlight those submissions which have been frequented by our readers and jury, in the lead up to the reveal of Interiors of the Month winners and honourable mentions. Here are the five most-viewed spaces between 30 April to 7 May 2021.

1. SHABU LAB

IF Integrated Field

A restaurant space for shabu-shabu cuisine in Bangkok, Shabu Lab (6.25; Restaurant) was designed to turn dining experiences into an ‘actual scientific experiments’. Conceived by IF Integrated Field, the interior champions sufficient workspace for the staff, efficiency and cleanliness. Graphic design elements add boldness to the otherwise monochromatic set-up. ‘It’s a modern, clean and industrially driven design with lighthearted neon moments,’ comments jury member Leni Popovici, founding director and partner at KAP Studios. ‘There’s clever arrangement of space, with use at the core of the design process.’

2. RUMBLE GYM

Lenka Chubuklieva

London Health Club Rumble Gym (6) is the city’s ‘first carbon-neutral boutique fitness and wellness studio’. An industrial aesthetic is paired with a sustainability-led design agenda, the work of Lenka Chubuklieva. Areas within the 650-sq-m interior – which spans five luxury spaces and studios – can be converted to serve multiple purposes, offering users a maximum of possible exercise programming. ‘Looks like they made this gym as cozy as possible,’ says Stefan Weil, Atelier Markgraph CCO. ‘There are some nice details in this massive concrete atmosphere.’

3. RAPPU

OWIU

Nearly 20-m long, a single continuous quartz bar forms the centrepiece of Rappu, an omasake sushi restaurant in Singapore (5.82). A custom LED lighting system that hangs above the bar aligns with changing music and movements, helping to establish a dynamic ambience. OWIU crafted the space – originally a shophouse – drawing from a range of multi-cultural references. ‘The project shows a well-executed, intimate club-style atmosphere,’ notes Gudy Herder, Eclectic Trends trend consultant, while posing that less stools may help create a more comfortable dining environment.

4. SHARJAH RTI

ROAR Design Studio

Submitted in the categories of Large Office (5.36) and Health Club (5.64), Sharjah RTI is a commercial space on a university campus in Sharjah spanning 25,000 sq-m. The project is aimed at ‘encouraging collaboration between academia and industry to produce thriving new companies,’ explains the team at Roar. Two atriums, several leasable offices for start-ups and incubators, anchor offices for blue-chip tenants, HQ offices and multiple ancillary areas comprise the layout. ‘It’s a well-executed concept with a charming reference to the falaj system,’ thinks Hollandse Nieuwe partner Christiaan Fokkema. However, he says, ‘The functional floor space looks a bit empty and overlooked.’

5. HOTEL CHIMERA

Elena Salmistraro Design Studio and Florim

Designer Elena Salmistraro joined forces with Florim to develop an installation for the brand in Milan. Hotel Chimera (6.68; Exhibition), as it’s dubbed, ‘investigates the potential’ of Florim’s large-format tile and slab products through a fantasy hospitality environment. Salmistraro drew upon the collections’ graphic themes and 20th-century design movements to build the tactile showcase space. ‘Art Deco shapes, forms and patterns are infused by lots of meaning and symbolism to support the larger concept,’ highlights Anne-Rachel Schiffman, director and senior architect at Snøhetta.
