Maggie’s Nottingham

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

At Maggie’s Nottingham – an alternative cancer recovery centre – CZWG Architects designed a building with ‘friendly oval faces,’ to resemble a fairy tale house.

Virtually symmetric and covered with green glazed ceramic tiles, the building conveys a sense of balance and space. Its location inside the Nottingham City Hospital campus was carefully selected for its quiet location, surrounded by trees that function as a buffer to create a tranquil setting.

The building is spread over two floors and a basement. To access the ground floor central lobby, a bridge must be crossed. Inside, the interiors have a deliberately domestic feel, entirely designed by Paul Smith. Balconies extend from the communal areas, providing contemplation spots.

‘The light, peaceful and non-institutional design of Maggie’s Nottingham is a sanctuary for all those who walk through the door,’ says Piers Gough of CZWG Architects.
