Wuhan Police Museum is located in Shengli Street, Jiang’an District, Wuhan, Hubei, China. The block is part of the historic culture area of the old Hankou, the construction was formerly the site of the patrol house of the Ministry of Industry of the German Concession. The whole construction is in the style of Victorian neoclassicism, and it was rated as Outstanding Historic Building by government.

In the process of renovation, on the basis of completely retaining the original architectural pattern, we make a new plan for the internal space, aiming to make this traditional building glow with new vitality in the contemporary era. Although the project is mainly an interior design project, we hope to break through the limitation and try to redefine the museum basing on the “Emergence Theory”. From designing space to designing events, we strive to make this museum become a “culture generator” of the city which can connect past and future, bring together different people and stimulate various cultural events.

Functional zoning is as follows: The 1st floor includes temporary exhibition area, tourist reception center and office area. The 2nd floor includes the permanent exhibition area and air platform. The 3rd floor is a special library which is also a multi-functional cultural and creative center that lectures and salons are often be held. Volunteers can even come here to experience the restoration of cultural relics.

The Basic Exhibition of Wuhan Police History on the 2nd floor is the focus of this project. According to different historical periods and display contents, we have set up five exhibition halls of different sizes. We pay great attention to the interactive experience between visitors and the venue, thus we set up many interesting interactive devices. Visitors can turn the knob of the clock tower model to view the introduction of various police appellations in different historical periods. The mobile magnifier on the glass wall is specially set for observing details of police badges. In the corner besides windows, several heavy albums of old photos can be taken down to read, remind people of old times.

At the exit, a fingerprint souvenir desk allows the audience to take their own fingerprints home for collection which makes the exhibition experience extend to daily life. As for the narration, we excavate ten historical highlights and the story of father and son police, showing time changes from specific details and expressing family bond from inheritance of professional ideal between ordinary people.

As an excellent historical building, the construction itself carries strong cultural gene. In the renovation, we have filled the old skeleton with new flesh and blood. We integrated contemporary elements, and introduced a variety of business forms such as exhibition, cultural innovation, voluntary service, academic forum and students’ study tour. The ancient building is truly glowing with prosperous vitality in the new era.
