Located in an old district in Haikou, China, Slash is a vibrant, bright, cozy café during the day, and a whisky bar at night. To accommodate the switch between these two programs, simple forms, and geometries, such as arches, circles, and rounded corners, are employed in the limited space to generate a gentle background for flexible adaptations. Entering from the main entrance, one would encounter a dark green archway extruded from the wall and anchored with a green marble step.
Moving forward, one would pass through the transitional space, and enter the seating space defined by the curved glass and the curved wall. Painted with semi-glossy and off-white finishes, the curved walls and corners harmonize with the material palette: the light-colored concrete floor, oak wood frames, light grey cotton booths, and round stools. These elements are properly arranged in the space, adding to the project a layer of coziness. In contrast with the lightness, the dark green marble tables, along with blooming tropical plants and dark color metal decorations, are anchored at the austere backdrop, highlighting themselves as the protagonists of the space.
As an ongoing experiment with the idea of "Possible Furniture", No-no Atelier deploys furniture as an operative tool of spatial interventions in this project. For instance, during the day, the liquor cabinet is veiled by translucent panels, through which the dark green arches and liquor bottles are looming in the flickering light. At night, as soon as the bartender folds up the panels to two sides, the liquor cabinet will be fully unveiled and soon become the center of attention, advancing a vibrant ambiance amid the iridescent fresco and glittering bottles.
In addition, the designer displayed their attention to small design objects. For instance, the metal piece of the wall lamp resembles the logo of Slash, while the circular mirror hung on the curved wall reflects the scene of the main space. To resonate with the flexible translucent panels, the green showcase, facing the entrance, is designed to be rotatable with coffee products and liquor on two sides, indicating the alternation of different programs in the space.
