The Concierge reimagines a compact lobby corner as a minimalist retail space, seamlessly integrating with its auction house surroundings. The "space within a space" concept creates an independent yet cohesive retail zone, harmonizing luxury retail with gallery aesthetics. Instead of relying on conventional luxury materials, the design embraces the "beauty of blank space," where negative space enhances the perceived value of high-end products.
An in-depth study of minimalism in traditional Korean art and architecture influenced the concept of the "beauty of blank space," which The Concierge translates into a subtle yet impactful spatial experience. The design emphasizes restraint, rhythm, and material contrast rather than excessive ornamentation.
The display system enhances the luxury retail experience—rectangular cases of varying sizes are embedded in white walls, creating a rhythmic flow that highlights each product.
The Concierge carefully balances openness and privacy, ensuring both an inviting customer experience and the necessary security for high-value transactions. Strategically placed partitions and display cases create an exclusive atmosphere without disrupting the open feel. The glass door and windows create a welcoming presence, while the reception desk is positioned to maintain discretion during private consultations.
The space stays discreet by day but glows at night, utilizing the perforated facade and wooden display shelves to control visibility. As a result, The Concierge softly illuminates in the evening, drawing attention without disrupting the overall architectural harmony.
Seamless joint construction between new and existing walls ensures a flawless minimalist aesthetic. To overcome technical constraints, such as the lack of an electrical floor box, electric and fire lines were routed from the ceiling along the existing column, ensuring a non-intrusive integration of infrastructure. The lobby’s air circulation and air conditioning system were also seamlessly integrated through an exposed ceiling structure, ensuring both comfort and spatial continuity while enhancing the sense of openness.
The Concierge embodies sustainability through conscious material selection and adaptive reuse. Existing structural elements were retained and refined, minimizing construction waste and reducing environmental impact. Instead of replacing walls, the team adapted surfaces, extending the life cycle of existing materials while maintaining a seamless new design.
The beauty of blank space aligns with sustainable principles, avoiding excessive ornamentation and unnecessary materials. This proves that luxury can be achieved through spatial composition rather than material abundance, making The Concierge a responsible yet elegant retail space.
