Video: This responsive exhibition shows AI’s potential in experiential immersion

Designed by Eness, the travelling exhibition uses AI to cultivate an immersive experience focused on connection and introspection.

Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness was created to raise questions about wisdom, happiness and spirituality in the age of AI. Conceived by Eness, the FRAME Awards-winning exhibition was originally designed around the alcoves, vaulted ceilings and beams of a 12th-century chapel at Les 3 CHA, a contemporary art centre in Châteaugiron, France, and has since been adapted for other venues around the world. Bringing AI to life, the installation takes visitors on an immersive journey through a landscape of fabric inflatable ‘mountains’ in psychedelic patterns that chant incantations, chime and blink at passersby through digital eyes. ‘Inside of these characters we’ve developed a way to be able to interact with the outside world,’ says Nimrod Weis, artist and founder of Eness. ‘When people walk by, we can detect that movement and translate that to content, and maybe the creatures will wake up and respond to your interaction with them.’ The exhibition demonstrates how AI and other generative technologies can be harnessed to cultivate moments for connection.
