Constantly evolving technologies are enabling musicians to play complexly layered compositions on stage without the support of a backup band, yet the resulting performances often lack expressiveness. Brooklyn-based artist, musician and maker Jonathan Sparks transforms gestures into music – and an accompanying light show – with the aid of sensitively designed electronic devices. His latest instrument, Nomis, integrates intuitive movements into the creative process to maximize the connection between the digital and physical worlds. Sparks selects, plays and repeats MIDI sounds as they visibly travel through flashing interfaces, illustrating the build-up of loop-based music.
