UPPER AUSTRIA – At a private home in Upper Austria, a steel structure acts as a cocoon to protect a swimming pool from the sun’s rays and neighbours' peering eyes.
The geometric surface is an interpretation of a classic rustic fence that has been updated into a 3D form. The concave form extends with an overhang which stretches over half the pool.
‘It doesn’t demarcate the space, but creates it and renders it an experience,’ say Josef Saller and Heribert Wolfmayr of heri&salli. ‘The function as a demarcation slides into the background and is only a by-product.'
The frame is made of solid welded flat steel pieces, while the shell is made of diamond-shaped plates attached with tabs. 'The curves convey a feeling of vastness, making the space seem bigger than it is,’ Saller and Wolfmayrsay say.
