A compendium of case studies and interviews with leading designers and architects, The Futureproof Home – FRAME Publishers' latest book (purchase a copy here)– invites you to imagine the ways a home can help us live more consciously – in relationship with ourselves, each other and the planet.

The last three years have transformed our perception of home. For some, it emerged as a haven amidst the chaos, a space for strengthening family ties and cultivating new interests. It transcended its role as a mere shelter, morphing into an office, gym and studio. Conversely, for others, it became a confining space, oppressive and restrictive, lacking in privacy and functionality. The absence of proper infrastructure and adaptability resulted in an overwhelming convergence of people and tasks into one space.

The pandemic laid bare the shortcomings of traditional housing design, sparking a profound re-evaluation of the home’s purpose and function. However, this wasn’t an abrupt shift; it marked the peak of a slow, ongoing transition. Individuals had grown increasingly aware of their options and limitations concerning their living spaces. They began to notice previously disregarded details and started to question and redefine the notion of domesticity.

As climate instability intensifies, the vulnerability of conventional homes becomes evident, underscoring the need for resilient design. The construction sector, notorious for its substantial environmental footprint, necessitates a thoughtful approach. Instead of constantly erecting new buildings, we should focus on refurbishing existing ones, ensuring their durability and sustainability. Soaring living costs in urban areas are driving many to consider cohabitation with friends, strangers or extended family. Additionally, the pandemic has sparked interest in alternative lifestyles, encouraging some to forge a closer connection with nature or embrace nomadism.

Our housing aspirations have been evolving. The standardised concrete structures that dominate urban landscapes and the uniform single-family homes scattered across suburban horizons no longer satisfy us. So, what do we seek? We desire adaptable housing that can accommodate shifts in lifestyle and provide flexible spaces suitable for diverse individuals throughout their changing lives in an uncertain future. In essence, we seek conscious housing. Housing that is aware of its function, environment, inhabitants, composition and impact. Consciousness is integral to futureproof design; it’s no longer an option but a necessity.

This book showcases a variety of projects that delve into innovative housing forms for present and future generations. These projects are driven by the principles of conscious design and living, which aim to optimise space, materials and resources. These principles give rise to diverse solutions, such as a relocatable mobile house, a flexible space that adapts to the occupants’ needs and preferences, a minimalist space that accommodates various functions and activities with minimal clutter, a creative application of local materials that enhances the space’s aesthetic and environmental quality and a resource-efficient system that utilises natural sources for water, heat and light. These projects are not confined to a specific format; instead, they adapt to the unique challenges and opportunities of each site and situation. They illustrate that housing can be more than just a shelter – it can be a dynamic and sustainable living environment.

When we began writing this book, our objective was clear: To present a vision of future housing that, while not necessarily luxurious, is accessible to the average person and offers a lasting living experience. However, we pondered what we might discover: What would be the unifying theme? Would it be expressed with a frugal architectural grammar, based on an economy of means? Would it result in an unremitting sequence of raw and unembellished spaces or an architecture so pragmatic in its approach and sparing in its features that it appears stark and uninspiring, lacking the vitality and creativity that could infuse life and character into a residential space?

Our research has refined our understanding of the designers working in this field. The book features these highly talented individuals who are redefining the concept of housing for the future. They design spaces with purpose, functionality and adaptability in mind. These spaces consider the environmental, social and economic impacts of housing. They are responsive to the evolving needs and preferences of their inhabitants. These designers envision the future of housing not as a static concept, but as a dynamic and evolving one. Their diligent work has shaped this book and continues to shape our homes.

The ‘Use’ chapter introduces spaces designed for adaptability, ready for changes in function and purpose. ‘Occupancy’ explores co-living and multi-generational spaces, tailored to the unique needs of their inhabitants. ‘Surroundings’ examines homes that harmoniously integrate with their natural environment. The ‘Resources’ chapter highlights homes that prioritise energy and water conservation, embodying sustainable living. Finally, ‘Materials’ reveals innovative uses of materials, especially locally sourced ones, for futureproofing. These five chapters form the basis of conscious design and living. While each chapter focuses on a specific aspect, many featured projects span multiple chapters, reflecting the designers’ skill and commitment to futureproofing housing.

In our rapidly changing world, we find ourselves yearning for a more conscious approach to living and design. This collective aspiration is particularly evident in our quest for the ideal home. We crave dwellings that not only adapt to our changing needs but also conserve resources and harmoniously coexist with their environment. The visionary designers featured in this book are the architects of our future homes. They craft spaces that are purposeful, adaptable and sustainable, reflecting the dynamic nature of housing. Their work unveils the blueprint for a new era of housing, one that is flexible, considerate and forward-thinking. Each chapter in this book is a pillar of conscious design, shedding light on a resilient future for housing where every detail has a purpose. In this unfolding story of housing, we envision a future where a home is more than just a shelter; it’s a testament to conscious living and design.
