Introducing: Sebastian Goldschmidtböing

To Sebastian Goldschmidtböing design is a no-frills practice where form precedes – or better, anticipates – function rather than just following it. The young German designer’s minimally-shaped objects are stripped bare of any unnecessary decoration, streamlined to serve the purpose, but such purpose often goes beyond their more traditional interpretation. His designs encourage latent behaviours and provoke playful diversions.

What was your first project?
My first design project was a bench inspired by the concept and special atmosphere of a bridge.

Where does your inspiration come from?
Inspiration can come from anywhere! I enjoy exploring and making use of many different sources to find inspiration for my work. The level of communication and the relationship between men and the man-made objects that surround us fascinates me. I like emotions that link us to objects and the role they play in daily life.

What's your design process?
During my process I use my intuition a lot. It's very important for me to work with my hands and actually physically create. Most of the time, I start with a drawing or a collage, but it could also be a quick model, a sketch, sometimes a text. With the first steps, I usually try to catch a rough idea of the concept or the feeling I'm interested in. From there I go and think further in many directions, to see what makes the project more outspoken and precise.

What are you planning to work on next?
Niko Leung Hong Ken and I plan to do a project together. She is a designer from Hong Kong, who lives and works in the Netherlands. I like her work a lot and am curious to see how we will work together.

City of Residence I recently moved to Cologne
Age 28
