425 Park Ave by Foster + Partners

NEW YORK – Foster + Partners has won a competition to realize an iconic new skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan.

The project, which will be erected at 425 Park Avenue, will include the redevelopment of an existing 65-year-old building on the site. Foster + Partners’ proposal features a tapered steel-frame tower with three sheer sides that will illuminate the city’s skyline. The new structure will rise 209m, compared to the existing 112-m-high outdated tower currently on the plot.

Lord Foster's design will be divided into three distinct tiers, which flow seamlessly into one another. At each break between tiers will be a landscaped terrace for tenants to enjoy (and will also allow for column-free interiors).

‘Our aim is to create an exceptional building, both of its time and timeless, as well as being respectful of this context – a tower that is for the city and for the people that will work in it, setting a new standard for office design and providing an enduring landmark that befits its world-famous location,’ says Lord Foster.

Foster + Partners beat out competitors Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel and Richard Meier for the project win. The structure will be realized for L&L Holding Company and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., which hosted the contest.
