Sustainable Comfort: Rest spaces reimagined at Zozobase at Tsukuba 3, Tsukuba
Introducing Humanity to a Cutting-Edge Logistics Facility
The ZOZO Base Tsukuba 3, a 137,000㎡ logistics hub for ZOZO, the operator of ZOZOTOWN, combines innovation and sustainability. ZOZOTOWN, Japan’s largest fashion e-commerce platform, connects millions to a wide variety of apparel. Located in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture—a city celebrated for its natural surroundings and scientific innovation—this facility is the company’s third in the area. It achieves a 30% labor reduction through automation, runs entirely on renewable energy, and uses sustainable materials. However, the focus on efficiency risked creating a cold, machine-like environment. To counter this, we designed 1,200㎡ rest spacess to restore humanity, offering inviting spaces for workers to relax and reconnect. These spaces redefine industrial environments by blending functionality, comfort, and sustainability.
Originality Through Sustainable Design
The rest spaces creatively address environmental challenges by upcycling disused clothing. Garments from ZOZOUSED, a shop specializing in secondhand apparel, were transformed into distinctive wall art, signage, and craft planting. For example, denim was carefully sorted to highlight stitching, pockets, and hems, creating unique design elements. These materials seamlessly merge sustainability with artistic expression, turning waste into meaningful design components.
Prioritizing Human Needs and Experiences
The rest spaces provide comfort and rejuvenation through two fashion-inspired designs. The ‘denim area’ features indigo-dyed walls, upcycled denim benches, and durable materials that age gracefully, encouraging long-term attachment. The ‘check-pattern area’ includes planting art made from discarded clothing, creating a soothing natural vibe. Both spaces contrast with the industrial warehouse, using natural materials like offcuts and thinned cedar wood to enhance warmth and tactile appeal. These spaces prioritize workers’ emotional and physical well-being, fostering connection and relaxation.
Contributing to Social, Economic, and Environmental Wellbeing
This project tackles environmental issues by repurposing waste and promoting sustainable design. Locally, it supports diverse employment opportunities in Tsukuba, a city recognized for innovation. By incorporating local motifs and thoughtful craft designs, the break rooms foster a sense of attachment among workers, boosting productivity and reducing turnover. The ZOZO Base Tsukuba 3 harmonizes efficiency with sustainability, humanity, and community engagement, setting a benchmark for innovative industrial spaces.
