Revitalizing Industrial Heritage through Transient Urbanism Implementation
Considered by historian Tim Doling as one of the three great colonial railway works built during the early 20th century, Gia Lam Train Factory was initially built as a mechanical depot. Currently being scheduled to relocate away from its current site, the factory’s future and historical legacy are uncertain and at risk of being eroded under the pressure of urban redevelopment. In the context of this project “The grid”, where the central theme revolves around the concept of experimentation in repurposing the factory, we find ourselves immersed in a larger narrative of transitory urbanism. We intended to integrate the factory into a process transforming the temporality into permanent. This concept of space essentially serves as a manifesto against prevailing contemporary construction practices that prioritize speed and mass production over the preservation of the city’s rich industrial legacy.
The exhibition space, organised in a grid format, pays homage to the rich tapestry of Vietnamese industrial heritage, which began in the mid-20th century. This grid layout resonates with the principles of equality and efficient production and circulation, which were central to Vietnam's industrialization efforts following its independence in 1954. It ensures equal access to and recognition of every facet of the exhibition, mirroring the nation's commitment to providing equal opportunities for its citizens.
The exhibition consisted of 2 main zones:
Archival Zone: This zone serves as a treasure trove of historical insight, showcasing the works of Hanoi ad hoc initiative on Vietnam industrial landscape. This zone provides a rich tapestry of information, painting a vivid picture of the factories' evolution and their profound impact on the region.
Artistic Experimentation zone: Here, artists employ their talents to breathe new life into found objects from the factory, transforming them into works of art. Showcasing the power of reimagining and repurposing materials with fresh perspectives.
