Innovation and Creativity
TIME=COLOUR is a collaboration between artist and designer Sigrid Calon and NAP Labs. Together, we have re-imagined the “tick tock” of passing time by bringing together art, cutting edge technology, design, and playful explorations of shapes and colour.

Time is a beautiful and special concept and something we tend to take for granted. We often don't have enough time, time goes too fast, be on time for your appointment, etc. The piece is much more than a clock, we see it as an object based on time.

TIME=COLOUR showcases the flow of time through ever-changing patterns, creating unique compositions as time unfolds. Thanks to our innovative approach to code-based color and shape patterns, users can explore their own personal way to tell time based on choices of graphic, classic, or abstract layouts.

At NAP Labs we are characterized by a forward-thinking approach to technology and design. We are always on the lookout for collaborations with artists and designers interested in exploring the tech we produce through their own creative and artistic vision. For this creation, we paired up with Dutch artist Sigrid Calon, whose work focuses on color and pattern explorations that can manifest as books, prints, textile, and installation.

The idea was to put the code we develop in her hands and facilitate a way for her to explore the representation of the passing of time based on ever-changing patterns and colour. In Sigrid’s own words: “Time for me is something special, it's the fourth dimension! More 'traditional' art and design is two or three dimensional, code adds the fourth and I love playing with that extra dimension.”

Functionality
The user can create their own personal relationship with the piece in an intuitive and organic way. For example, one setting, which is called TIME=COLOUR, omits the numbers completely, however the passage of time is still manifested in the background gradients. This creates compositions in moving areas of color.

We made a limited edition of 50 pieces, and every one of them is completely unique. This was a challenge we wanted to address head on. It pushed us forward in the search for beautiful and timeless color schemes. The piece has a number of different basic setups. For example, you can choose only two colours in the background, but more variation in the numbers. Some pieces have the powerful colour combination in the background of yellow, red, blue and white, which is of course a bit of a tribute to De Stijl and Mondriaan.

Sustainability
The technology we produce at NAP is open source, sustainable, reusable, and respectful of privacy. In the case of TIME=COLOUR, the piece is built to last, made in the EU with high quality materials, repairable parts and rock-solid software. If any of the parts of the piece fail, or run through their lifetime, they can be easily replaced, and we provide personal support for users that might need help replacing the parts.
