This project was a collaboration with a woodturning factory in Shizuoka, Japan. The project name "di + re products" means " di=Disassembly +re=Recreating".
While woodturning products are generally circular in shape with contrasting left and right sides, I thought we could create an innovative and creative product that could not be created with a normal rotating object while still using ground product technology.
It is a form that is created by disassembling and reassembling the collected and processed products. Unique forms were born by intentionally adding slight deviations, tilts, rotations, reversals, and other changes somewhere in the series of processes for producing woodturning products, and then reconstructing them. These products are clad in gentle forms and calculated geometrical beauty at the same time, which are born from handcrafting in all processes. They are not intended to be used in a specific way but can be freely used for multiple purposes in various situations depending on the user.
In addition, for a woodturning factory that used to make small items such as tableware, it was a challenge to produce a large stool-sized woodwork product, as well as an improvement in technology and the discovery of new possibilities for turnery.
nu stool
nu stool is a stool made by cutting two triangles of the same shape from a cylindrical body carved on a potter's wheel, turning them upside down, and joining them together. The bold shape of the stools, which are joined at the slightest point of contact between the arc surfaces, accentuates the space as a stool, side table, or art object.
quad stool
quad stool is a stool made by dividing a simple shape carved on a wheel into four vertical sections, inverting them, and combining them. The proportions of the stool, while seemingly simple at first glance, are well calculated, and the amount of cutting, the amount of straight parts left, and the slight angle adjustment during the reassembling process, all show the designer's attention to detail, the high level of craftsmanship, and the new possibilities for turnery.
otto stool
The word "otto" means "8" in Italian. Within the seemingly monotonous columnar shape, a line tilted at an 8-degree angle appears to float rhythmically. This characteristic line gives a slight change to the silhouette and the expression of the wood grain depending on the direction of view and becomes an accent that subtly asserts itself in the space.
otto bowl & otto plate
otto bowl & otto plate are part of the otto series. The characteristic lines and asymmetrical shape emerge by shaving at an 8-degree angle. This characteristic silhouette, which changes depending on where it is viewed, stands out even more when stacked, and can be enjoyed not only as a plate, but also as an object or as an interior accent.
