MAIDSTONE – The Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery shines in new splendour, due to the golden shimmering facade of its new East Wing.
After winning a 2007 competition, English firm Hugh Broughton Architects built the extension to improve the museum’s services and facilities while increasing visitor numbers and public involvement.
The core of the museum is a historic Tudor manor house from 1561. Next to it, the extension contrasts with clear contemporary lines and expanses of glass and golden cladding; copper alloy shingles give the East Wing a shining look. These gold shingles refer to the treasures exhibited inside and to the pattern of the manor’s leaded windows.
Maidstone is located in Kent, England, about 60 km south-west of London.
