Using precise dimensions and engineering, a giant installation was made of thousands of layers of adhesive tape, topped with a carpet shell.

The structure is elevated at 4m high inside a former church in Pula, Croatia, and is accessible by a ladder. Designers at Numen/For Use say the setting works to enhance the sensationalism of the project. Its rough black exterior contrasts the welcoming, cozy carpeted interior, where visitors are invited to crawl inside. Underneath the carpet wrapping is a base of tape layers which form the curved funnels.

‘TUFT is an evolution of the tape concept into a more permanent, self-standing, transferable structure,’ says Christoph Katzler of Numen/For Use. ‘The result is a surreal simultaneous feeling of anxiety and thrill whilst entering into the installation.’

While visitors might be hesitant at first, once venturing inside they understand the functionality and enjoy the tactile (soft) and auditory (quiet) aspects of the project.

The installation can be seen until 29 March, 2012.
