Student Village @ Royal Veterinary College

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

HERTFORDSHIRE – While student housing buildings are often described as decrepit, gloomy or outdated, the Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire, England, provides students with a refreshingly modern – and designed – way of living.

The campus offers accommodation for 205 students, plus a restaurant and conference room. Spanning 6480-sq-m, the development is comprised of three and four-storey pavilions with groupings of central courtyards between them.

The new structures, designed by Hawkins\Brown are made largely of brick and timber to reflect the pre-existing buildings on the campus. These materials were selected as they require littler maintenance and age well. Meanwhile, staircases that link between the new buildings are covered in protective aluminium casings, whose bronze hue blends with neighbouring structures.

Sustainable aspects were incorporated into the design, including solar thermal devices to heat water, grey water recycling, plus energy-saving tools.
