Designers from the Netherlands brought their A game to Dutch Design Week 2022 in Eindhoven. We’ve gathered six of the best shows if you missed it this year.
NO SPACE FOR WASTE
Studio Mast
Amsterdam-based practice Studio Mast joined forces with the curators at Isola, sustainable thinker Marije Remigius of Fiction Factory and OneEightyOne for No Space for Waste. The exhibition saw production and construction waste transformed into display furniture and scenography, an effort to encourage more eco-responsible practices for show design. A total of 70 sheets of Petfelt from the Van Gogh Museum was repurposed, in addition to 25-sq-m of plywood from the Rijksmuseum and melted plastic sawdust from The Good Plastic Company.
EXPEDITION ÆQUALIS
Dutch Invertuals
Presenting work from eight design studios, Expedition Æqualis invited visitors to consider how design can lead us toward an eco-centric future. The collaboration between Dutch Invertuals, The Future Laboratory and Reon Brand covered this investigation over ten themes – including ‘Interconnectedness’, ‘Commons’ and ‘Spirituality’ – translated into tangible designs by the creatives featured.
HOME(LAND)
Dasha Tsapenko, Nazar Gresko
For Home(Land), curators Dasha Tsapenko and Nazar Gresko tapped Ukrainian and Dutch designers to share craft-led pieces reflecting on the loss of one’s home. Participating designers developed iterations of a gunya, a coat traditionally worn by Ukrainian shepherds, or tableware sets. The resulting collection proposes alternative production processes with the use of natural materials, like mycelium, hemp and more.
LOW RESOLUTION
Kiki & Joost x Very Simple Kitchen
Highlighting their intuitive, low-tech approach to design, Kiki & Joost developed a kitchen module for exhibition that translates low-resolution graphics and turns the culinary space into a work of art. The island – produced with Very Simple Kitchen – combines a custom-painted pink body with rounded corners and a white Carrara marble top. For the display at Kiki & Joost’s studio, the designers paired the island with custom lamps.
THE SOLAR PAVILION
V8 Architects x Marjan van Aubel Studio
Offering a space for people to gather and learn how harvesting energy from the sun works, the Solar Pavilion by V8 Architects and Marjan van Aubel Studio comprised a set of colourful panels sourced from Kameleon Solar stretched over four steel masts. The materials that went into the fully circular installation – a partnership with the inaugural Solar Biennale – will be returned to the owners and partners.
THE GREEN WASH SHOP
New Order of Fashion x Studio Hurra PangPang
Aiming to show the design potential of discarded garments, New Order of Fashion and Studio Hurra PangPang created a playful space for visitors to pick a mix of textiles to be turned into a bespoke design. A team of designers and stylists was present at The Green Wash Shop to repurpose the garments on site.
