Rigo 23: Autonomous Intergalactic Space Program

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Portuguese artist Rigo 23 infuses his art with a political edge. His newest project, Rigo 23: Autonomous Intergalactic Space, consists of a complex environment gathering objects and pieces produced by artisans and activists in Southern Chiapas.

The project aims to explore the role of material objects and crafts in giving a voice to the struggle for social justice and equality promoted by the Zapatista movement. The reference to the space and the intergalactic connection refers to the Mayan mythology and beliefs, but it's transposed in contemporary terms.

Among the works on show, some paintings have a naïve style reminiscent of traditional folklore. Ultimately, the scenes represent Zapatista activists intent in spreading their political messages of hope and change across the world.

An installation in the centre of the room resembles a space ship carrying activists out of their local reality, guarded by the sun and the moon but also controlled by a satellite device.

The project is part of the activities promoted by REDCAT for encouraging art's lively civic engagement with social realities. The show runs until 17 June at Gallery at REDCAT.
